The jungle was so different without Chris. It was dark. She couldn't see anything. The first hour was extremely difficult. She had to maintain such a strong focus just to keep from tripping. Kena and Roiti were very hard to keep up with. After hours of this difficult trek, the trail opened up. Light from the moon trickled through the trees. The path was wide, flat, and easy to traverse.
Though with the ease of the route, Gabby's mind began to wander and sink into the depths of her feelings. She missed Chris. Her heart ached for Trent. Now, she was bringing the treatment right to the people that were responsible for everything that went so horrifically wrong. She had been so sure that she was doing the right thing in the cave. But now, she began to question everything. She told herself it was too late to turn around. Too late to change her mind. This was the chain of events that Trent set in motion. She had to hold on to that.
Out of the blue, Roiti turned around, grabbed Gabby's arm, and started running, pulling her along the trail so fast her legs could barely keep up. She was exhausted. Her muscles burned. She tripped and tumbled to the ground, hitting her head. Roiti and Kena pulled her up. They each grabbed an arm and kept running. She could feel a trickle of blood drip down her brow. They unexpectedly jumped off the trail and pulled Gabby behind a fallen tree.
It was quiet. Nothing happened for a few minutes. Then, Gabby heard a faint buzzing in the distance. It grew louder. A light appeared. It was an ATV towing a cart. As it came closer, Gabby could see that there were two guys on the ATV wearing tattered, modern clothes. Roiti pulled Gabby down. She slowly stretched up again to get a better look, just peeking her eyes over the trunk. As the vehicle passed, Gabby saw that they had three guys in a small cage on the cart they were towing. The guy on the back had an electric cattle prod and he continually shocked the prisoners, laughing loud each time their bodies tensed in the grip of electricity. As the cart passed, one of the prisoners made eye contact with Gabby. She froze, her eyes widened, and she started to panic. The prisoner slowly bowed his head to her. The maniac with the cattle prod shocked him and as his lips peeled back in a pain-laden contraction, Gabby could see most of his teeth had been knocked out.
This group looked like they had just crawled out of some backwoods horror scene. They were filled with so much madness and violence that it seemed surreal. For a minute, Gabby wondered if she was actually asleep and having a nightmare. The tickle of blood slowly clotting on her forehead reminded her she was wide awake.
They stayed behind the trunk long enough to ensure they were safe. Gabby rolled onto her back and looked up.
